Research has consistently shown that children of gay and lesbian parents do not differ from children of heterosexual parents on measures of mental health, academic achievement, peer relations, or gender-role identity. Furthermore, there is no evidence to support the notion that children of gay and lesbian parents are more likely to be homosexual themselves or that they are encouraged by their parents to experiment with partners of both sexes. The research also does not support the idea that children of gay and lesbian parents get along better with same-sex peers, although they may be more accepting of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
