According to the DSM-5, a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) requires the presence of at least five symptoms during the same two-week period that represent a change from previous functioning. These symptoms must include either depressed mood or loss of pleasure or interest (anhedonia). Other symptoms include changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
