Intergenic regions frequently have no apparent function, meaning that any changes in these regions do not generally affect the wellbeing of an individual. As these regions don't tend to affect individual health, they are usually selectively neutral. Any positive or negative selection of a variant that was not anticipated by researchers could lead to an association study being misinterpreted, so it is preferable to use neutral loci where possible. Intergenic regions are no less likely to receive crossovers than genic regions, and variation in intergenic regions is no more or less strongly linked to ethnicity than variation in genic regions.
