In spermatogenesis, all four of the products of meiosis become sperm. In oogenesis, only one becomes a mature ovum. There are more meiotic crossovers between chromosomes in oogenesis than in spermatogenesis, but there are still four products of meiosis, each with the same number of chromosomes. In oogenesis, meiosis is arrested at different stages for sometimes prolonged period of times - overall, meiosis begins before birth but is only eventually completed if fertilization occurs. Spermatogenesis is continual, and sperm cells are rarely more than a few weeks old.
