This is a generally accepted model of memory consolidation in the brain, known as the Standard Model of Consolidation. According to this model, during encoding of new memories, the hippocampus creates a temporary index or "pattern completion" that links together all of the various sensory and contextual features of the memory. Over time, this index becomes consolidated in the neocortex, with the hippocampus gradually relinquishing its role in the memory trace. However, even after consolidation, the index or loop between the hippocampus and neocortex remains intact, and can be reactivated during retrieval or recall of the memory.
