Rice is clearly the most significant food crop to come from Asia. The archaeology of rice shows that:

A) it achieved a level of pre-eminence right from the beginning of the Neolithic in eastern Asia, at about 8,500 years ago
B) when it makes its first appearance, it is a minor part of the diet and remains so for a couple of thousand years
C) it was not domesticated in China but, rather, was domesticated in southeast Asia in Thailand, at the beginning of the Neolithic and moves north into China a couple of thousand years later
D) rice was first domesticated in Japan and diffused across the land bridge that connected Japan and China at the end of the Pleistocene
