If the edges of an ID feel a little rough, you can assume that the ID is a fake.
The vast majority of IDs are printed on 30 mil PVC cards, which have smooth edges that do not come apart. If you're unsure, try bending the ID a little while continuing to examine the edges. If the edges are rough and/or come apart slightly, the ID is most likely a fake.
