During the seventeenth century, global trade was highly competitive with no single dominant state. While the British Empire was beginning to expand its trading networks, it did not yet monopolize global trade. The movement of staple grains was certainly important, but other commodities such as textiles and spices were also significant. Ethnic Chinese merchants continued to play an important role in global trade, particularly in Southeast Asia.
