According to Locke, primary qualities (such as shape, size, and motion) exist objectively in the physical world and can be measured and described accurately. Ideas of primary qualities resemble the qualities themselves and are directly caused by them. Secondary qualities (such as color, taste, and smell), on the other hand, exist only in the mind of the perceiver and are dependent on the particular sensory organs and subjective experiences of the perceiver. Ideas of secondary qualities do not resemble the qualities themselves and may differ from one individual to another.
