The faucial pillars (also known as the anterior and posterior pillars) are formed by two muscles, the palatoglossus and the palatopharyngeus. The palatoglossus muscle runs from the soft palate to the side of the tongue and serves to elevate the tongue. The palatopharyngeus muscle runs from the soft palate to the pharynx and serves to elevate the pharynx. The other two muscles listed, the tensor veli palatini and the levator veli palatini, both play roles in controlling the movement of the palate but do not specifically contribute to the formation of the faucial pillars.
