The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was a response to the attacks of 9/11. The Taliban government in Afghanistan, which was providing safe haven for Al-Qaeda terrorists, refused to hand over Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attacks, and so the U.S. led an international coalition in a military operation to overthrow the Taliban and disrupt Al-Qaeda's presence in Afghanistan.
