The bicuspid (mitral) and tricuspid valves are the only valves that have chordae tendineae, which are strong fibrous cords that attach the valve cusps to the papillary muscles in the ventricular walls. These cords prevent the valve cusps from flipping inside out during ventricular contraction. The aortic and pulmonary valves are semilunar valves, which do not have chordae tendineae. Valves in veins are not typically referred to as having chordae tendineae. Coronary valves do not exist in the human heart.
