Most homes on-reserve are occupied by families through Certificates of Possession. These certificates are predominantly held by men on the reserve. In the event of relationship breakdowns, the mother/wife/common-law partner would not be legally entitled to an equitable division of assets. This threatens her ability to gain custody of her children, remain within her community, and survive.
