The patient that you should assess first is a patient who is on maximal medical therapy for 24 hours with persistent chest pain. Chest pain could be a sign of a myocardial infarction, unstable angina, or life threatening pulmonary embolus. The nurse needs to assess the patient for fluctuations in blood pressure, cardiac rate and rhythm, and ECG. Further assessment of accompanying symptoms and precipitating factors to the chest pain should be performed.
