The United States had the largest economy in 1970 (as determined by nominal GDP), with the Soviet Union, West Germany and Japan following respectively. France, the United Kingdom, Italy, China, Canada and India rounded out the top ten. The eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union fractured its economy, and none of its components (including Russia) have come close to reclaiming the success the Soviets together possessed. Similarly, the reunification of Germany did little to bolster the nation's economic status; reunified Germany has remained in roughly the same position that was occupied by West Germany alone.
