Shirley Chisholm was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1968, becoming the first African-American woman to serve in either house. Chisholm was the daughter of immigrants, a teacher, and an advocate for numerous social reforms, primarily for the benefit of women, racial minorities and children. She served until 1983.
