Two companies, Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad, joined to complete the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Chinese immigrants made up almost all of the Central Pacific Railroad's workforce. The Central Pacific section of the track was by far the shortest (690 miles out of 1777 miles total), but it was the most treacherous section to build because much of it ran through mountains. Explosives were necessary to tunnel through the rock.
