Charles Schulz was the author of Peanuts, which featured the beloved "Peanuts Gang" that included Charlie Brown, Lucy Van Pelt and Snoopy, a beagle and famed aviator. The comic strip ran daily for almost 50 years, during which it was revealed that Snoopy was a noteworthy World War I pilot (possibly the Red Baron himself) and was the first astronaut to land on the Moon. NASA developed an affinity for Snoopy and named the lunar module on Apollo 10 for the flight-enthused beagle. The unmanned lunar module did, in fact, land on the Moon before Armstrong arrived on Apollo 11. Later, NASA also named an intra-agency award, the Silver Snoopy, in the beagle's honor.
