The U.S. Constitution provides for federal trial courts, appellate courts, and the Supreme Court. Most civil cases heard in federal court start in a trial court (though some go to a specialized court, such a military court or tax court). Trial courts listen to cases in their respective districts; the United States presently has 94 federal court districts. Cases can be appealed to an appellate court (appeals court) in their respective circuit court region. There are 12 circuit court regions and a Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which hears specialized cases.
