The division of legal responsibilities between separate but interrelated government bodies is separation of powers. In an attempt to keep power from becoming too concentrated in any office or government body, the Framers of the Constitution devised a system of checks and balances, in which all of the legal responsibilities of leading the nation would be spread among three branches of government: the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
