The U.S. government is a constitution-based federal republic. While the United States is based upon strong democratic principles and largely attempts to conduct itself democratically, it is, technically, a republic. The key difference between a democracy and a republic is who or what establishes the law. A democracy is always governed by the will of the people whereas a republic is governed according to a charter. The Founders feared that a pure democracy would descend into mob rule, thus allowing a majority of the people to usurp the rights of the minority. The inclusion of the term "federal" is an important distinction-it indicates that the national government has limited power and some legal power belongs to the subdivisions within the country (in this case, states).
