A government in which the individual people have the supreme power is called a democracy. The supreme power in a socialist government rests with a centralized government that aims to achieve uniform, equal economic conditions for all of the people. In a system with pluralism, the supreme power is held by an array of interest groups both within and outside of a centralized government. The traditional model of pluralism, while intended to include all of the members of the society, generally ends up concentrated in the hands of elites, leaving some citizens excluded from the empowered groups. A variation of pluralism argues that no person or group really possesses any power and society simply keeps moving forward because it has no other option. In a republic, the supreme power is a charter that is recognized by the people as their legal code.
