If the President pocket vetoes a piece of legislation approved by Congress, the bill dies and does not become law. When the President receives a bill to sign in to law, he has 10 days to enact the bill or send it back to the legislative body in which it originated. However, if Congress adjourns during that 10-day window, the President can abstain from signing the legislation and it will expire on its own since Congress is not in session to accept the return.
