Jane Addams was a pioneer of settlement house movement, and in 1931 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She was the first American woman to receive the honor. (She was the second woman to receive the award and the sixth American; her five American predecessors included two Presidents of the United States, two Secretaries of State, and a Vice President.)
