Daniel Ellsberg is associated with the Pentagon Papers, the popular name for a Department of Defense study on the entire history of the Vietnam Conflict and the United States' role in it up until 1967. The report demonstrated that four U.S. presidents had misled the American public to varying degrees regarding U.S. involvement in the conflict. Ellsberg was a military analyst who worked on the report and felt the information should be public knowledge. He smuggled the report out of the DoD in October 1969. After several senators refused to assist him in making it public knowledge, in 1971 he released 43 volumes of documents to New York Times writer Neil Sheehan. Ellsberg was later tried for crimes related to the act but the case ended in a mistrial.
