India, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Chile are all members of the Non-Aligned Movement. India and the DRC were among the original member states that joined the organization when it was founded in 1961. The NAM was created during the Cold War as an alternative to aligning with Soviet or Western factions. The member states have primarily been Southern Hemisphere developing countries; every country in Africa (except Western Sahara and the new South Sudan) is a member, as are many states in Asia and Latin America. The name is a little bit of a misnomer-the member states are allowed to be aligned with other countries even against other NAM members, as has been the case throughout the organization's history. In fact, despite NAM's original purpose, Cuba became one of the original member states in 1961 while it simultaneously maintained a close relationship with the Soviet Union. As of 2013, the 120 NAM members primarily aim to work against colonialism or subjugation, promote economic development, and facilitate cooperation between members, though exceptions are periodically made regarding the latter. (China, Switzerland, and Finland have never been members of NAM.)
