In the Bakke case, the Supreme Court ruled that the UC medical schools could not admit a less-qualified student just because the student was a racial minority. It did, however, grant schools the opportunity to use race as one factor in admissions. This continues to be a difficult issue for universities as it is sometimes a challenge to figure out how to incorporate race as a factor without turning it into a quota.
