In US government, an impeachment is a lot like an indictment in the courts. You must first get an impeachment before there can be a trial to remove a sitting officeholder (not just the president). Impeachments and removals don't happen very often in the US. Presidents Clinton and Johnson were impeached, but not removed from office.
