The first two major political parties in the US were the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists. The Federalists were initially led by Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic-Republicans were led by Thomas Jefferson. The Democratic-Republicans have evolved into the modern Democratic Party. The Federalist Party disappeared around 1816, but many of the views of the Federalists were picked up on by the Whig Party and then the Grand Old Party (another name for the Republican Party).
