In 1858 Lincoln ran for the Senate against Stephen A. Douglas, and during the campaign the men faced off in seven debates, which came to be known as the Lincoln-Douglas debates. In them, Lincoln made his legendary "A House Divided" speech. Douglas won the Senate seat, but the men faced off again two years later for the presidency, which Lincoln won.
