The Soviet Union became the first formal atheist state, meaning that it did not recognize or promote any religion and actively promoted atheism. The Communist ideology rejected the existence of God and religion as an opiate of the masses, and therefore religion was suppressed and persecuted during the Soviet era. The Orthodox Church, which was historically significant in Russia, was also targeted and suffered significant losses in terms of property, influence, and numbers of followers.
