There are currently nine justices on the Supreme Court, although Congress can change that number if they like. Originally there were six justices. At different points in US history, there were also seven justices and ten justices. Usually these changes in number are due to practical necessity, but Franklin D. Roosevelt did try to convince Congress to increase the number of justices to 13 so he could fill those seats with new justices who would support New Deal legislation.
