Even though thousands of cases are appealed to the Supreme Court every year, only 75-80 are actually argued before the Court. The Court will also deal with another 50 or so on paper, but never hear oral arguments. This limited number makes sense given that each case can be very complicated and all nine justices have to hear the argument for each case.
