Esophageal achalsia is the inability of the lower esophageal sphincter to open and let food pass into the stomach. This is a rare disease that is characterized by dysphagia to both solid and liquid foods and chest pain (that may be mistaken for angina) due to accumulation of food in the lower end sphincter.
