REBT has been shown to be effective in treating mild to moderately severe mental health disorders, including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and adjustment disorders. It may also help some of the milder personality disorders (e.g. avoidant and dependent personality disorders) make important and pervasive changes. It is not recommended for treating traumatic childhood concerns due to its direct, somewhat confrontational stance. People with psychotic disorders may not have the ability to focus on cognitive distortions and thus would not find REBT to be helpful in treatment.
