Dissymmetry of lift. When a helicopter is stationary in a hover there is no extra movement of air across the rotor blades. However, when moving forward through the air the advancing blade will have an extra relative speed because of the movement of the air as the helicopter moves forward. This causes the advancing blade to produce more lift and the retreating blade to produce less lift.
