Almost all mothers with inverted nipples can breastfeed, so she should not give up hope. After all, it's breastfeeding, not nipple-feeding. The baby has to take all of the nipple and much of the areola into his or her mouth to nurse, and in doing so, can occasionally pull the nipple out enough to feed effectively. For some moms, prenatal preparation using a suction device or breast shells is helpful. For other moms, careful use of a nipple shield makes nursing possible on the affected side. If the inversion is on one side only and the baby is not able to nurse on that side, with good breastfeeding management, the other side will produce plenty of milk to sustain the baby.
