It's more likely that a mother will be affected by a poor diet than will her breastfeeding baby. Research shows that what a mother eats actually does little to change the composition of her milk. If she doesn't eat the "perfect" diet or likes to indulge in an occasional caffeinated or alcoholic beverage, her body still makes milk with the nutritional and immunological properties that a baby needs. A baby will get very little alcohol through breastmilk, but a nursing mother should limit her intake and consider nursing right before she has a drink.
