When timing contractions, start at the beginning of one contraction, make a note of when the contraction ends, and continue timing until the beginning of the next contraction. This will tell you how often the contractions are coming, and how long they are lasting. Typically a mother will be well into active labor when the contractions are 3-5 minutes apart and last 60 seconds each, and have been that way for at least an hour. Timing single contraction will only tell you the duration. Timing from the end of one to the beginning of the next gives an inaccurate frequency measure.
