Fetal monitoring is used in labor to assess the fetal heart rate and the strength of uterine contractions. The care provider may assess fetal position from the exterior by feeling the size, shape, firmness, and movement of the baby. Mothers can be taught to do this for themselves, as well. The baby can also be assessed during a vaginal exam - the care provider can determine if the baby is in a cephalic or breech presentation, and if the baby is head down the provider can determine if the baby is in an anterior or posterior lie.
