Oxytocin is the hormone responsible for uterine contractions, and some healthcare providers deliver a bolus of Pitocin to all new mothers in order to keep those contractions happening to limit postpartum bleeding and facilitate uterine involution. This will not cause sleepiness and will not alleviate pain. Just as a mother may have many unnecessary interventions during labor, this birth related intervention is controversial. Some suggest it is not needed, especially if a mother is nursing her baby early and often, and has no risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage.
