Hallucinations are a hallmark of postpartum psychosis, and any woman experiencing such symptoms should seek help immediately for the safety of her baby and herself. Common symptoms of postpartum depression include: exhaustion, insomnia, excessive sleeping, frequent crying, appetite changes, poor concentration, lack of interest in baby, over concern for baby's well-being, irritability, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, feeling overwhelmed, feeling unable to cope with everyday care, loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, and anxiety symptoms (shakiness, dizziness, chest pain, rapid breathing and heart rate, chest pain, fear/sense of doom, etc.). Postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are both treatable, and a mother should be encouraged to seek help if she is feeling any of the symptoms above.
