The group B streptococcus test (sometimes called beta strep or GBS) is a swab of the vagina and rectum during a pelvic exam in late pregnancy. GBS is a common bacterium found in the lower genitourinary tract of 10%-35% of all healthy, adult women. If laboratory analysis signals that a woman is GBS positive, she will be treated with antibiotics during labor. For women who did not have a GBS test before the onset of labor, prophylactic antibiotics are sometimes used until GBS status can be confirmed. If a newborn is exposed to GBS during birth, health complications may include respiratory and circulatory problems, gastrointestinal and kidney problems, sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis.
