The double bind was an idea that came about from Ericksonian therapy, giving the client the choice of doing something now or later, but removing the choice of not doing it at all, particularly if it were of therapeutic benefit. This way, therapy could have a chance to act on and change those parties who were most in need. Clients who refused often found themselves brought along into a situation where the issue would be naturally resolved without their input of "now or later," but the choice is an important one, even if the outcomes are identical.
