The American court system consists of a federal system and a similar system of trial and appeals courts in each state. Federal courts handle cases that deal with federal law, while state courts handle cases that deal with state law. Each state has its own court system, which includes trial courts, appellate courts, and a state supreme court. Appeals for federal cases can be made to the U.S. Courts of Appeals and ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court. State court decisions, however, generally cannot be appealed to federal courts, and state supreme court decisions may be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court only in limited circumstances where a constitutional issue is involved.
