Cold fronts are associated with the leading edge of a cold air mass that is advancing southward or southeastward ahead of a middle-latitude cyclone. Because the cold air mass is denser than the warm air ahead of it, the cold front tends to advance rapidly and may move faster than the middle-latitude cyclone itself. This can cause the cold front to overtake and catch up to the warm front on the opposite side of the cyclone, leading to a process known as occlusion.
