The causative organism is the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as human herpes virus 3 (HHV-3), a member of the herpes virus group. The virus is transmitted by direct or indirect droplet nuclei spread from the respiratory tract of the infected person or a carrier. Fluid from the cutaneous lesions is also infectious, but dried crusty lesions are not contagious.
