Intrauterine exposure to sufficient levels of alcohol has been associated with fetal growth retardation, in which the infants are short and below average in weight. Facial characteristics of FAS include smaller eye openings with eyes spaced widely apart and a thin upper lip. The infant may experience growth deficiencies and CNS problems.
