The most common cause of cataracts is opacification of the lens caused by the aging process, and the condition is present in about 50% of persons over age 75 in the United States. They also may be congenital or may result from ocular trauma; drug toxicity (prolonged high-dose corticosteroid administration); systemic disease, such as diabetes mellitus; or a complication of other ocular diseases.
