An extinction burst is an increase of response after a behavior is no longer being reinforced. This stems from previously learning that if a pay-off is not forthcoming, an increase in behavior may be what it takes to get reinforcement. If the increase in behavior is reinforced, the behavior will continue. This can create several problems in the extinction process, including aggressive or self-harming behavior. If the extinction continues, however, the individual will eventually learn that the behavior will not be reinforced and the behavior will stop.
